For Human Rights and Justice: An Appeal to EU High Representative Kaja Kallas

Dear Ms. Kallas,

As the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, you face the challenging task of shaping European foreign policy in a time of significant geopolitical tensions. In this regard, we would like to draw your attention to the upcoming nuclear negotiations between the European Union, the United States, and Iran and urgently appeal to you to include the critical human rights situation in Iran in these discussions.
Since the protests following the tragic death of Mahsa Jina Amini in 2022, the human rights situation in Iran has dramatically deteriorated. Thousands of peaceful protesters, journalists, human rights activists, and political opponents have been imprisoned, tortured, or executed. The systematic suppression of freedom of expression and fundamental human rights blatantly violates international standards and must not be ignored.
At the same time, the Iranian regime is using the nuclear negotiations as a strategic tool to sideline demands for human rights compliance. We therefore urge you to take a firm stance and ensure that diplomatic negotiations are not solely focused on nuclear security but also include the protection of human rights as an essential component of the talks.
Specifically, we request the following actions:
- Increase diplomatic pressure – Utilize diplomatic channels to advocate for the release of political prisoners, innocent hostages, and an end to state violence.
- Expand targeted sanctions – Strengthen sanctions against Iranian government officials and organizations responsible for human rights violations.
- Support civil society – Establish protection programs for vulnerable activists and human rights defenders and facilitate safe escape routes for those persecuted.
- Support international investigations – Advocate for independent United Nations investigations into human rights violations in Iran to hold those responsible accountable.
The European Union has always played a leading role in the global fight for human rights. Your political responsibility and influence offer an opportunity to take a decisive stand against the continued repression in Iran and to be the voice of those who have been silenced in their own country.
We thank you for your commitment and urge you to use European diplomacy as a tool for justice. The people of Iran need our solidarity—do not leave them alone.
Sincerely,
Dr. Behrouz Bayat
